Let’s sort out the fact from the fiction when it comes to e-cigarettes, e-liquid and old-fashioned smoking.
There’s a lot of misinformation online when it comes to electronic cigarettes – so it’s important to do your homework and understand the facts.
Here are some of the most prevalent myths surrounding vaping, accompanied by facts to prove they are untrue. Don’t be afraid to Google around if you hear other rumours that just don’t stack up.
Myth one: E-cigarettes are a gateway to smoking.
Fact: Research by the Office for National Statistics indicates that only one in 300 vapers start smoking after using an e-cigarette for the first time. It’s usually the other way around – with smokers turning to electronic devices so they can kick their habit.
Myth two: There’s no evidence e-cigs help smokers quit.
Fact: On the contrary, many vapers have managed to stop smoking altogether since investing in an e-cigarette. A survey by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine revealed that, after six months of vaping, one in three people manage to avoid traditional cigarettes entirely.
Myth three: E-cigarettes can cause cancer.
Fact: It is true that normal cigarettes are filled with harmful carcinogens that can lead to serious illness. Although it is difficult to know the long-term effects of e-cigarettes, Cancer Research UK says the evidence so far shows they are “far less harmful than smoking.” This was backed up by a Public Health England review in 2015, which concluded they are about 95% less harmful than tobacco.
Myth four: Vapour and cigarette smoke are equally dangerous.
Fact: This is far from the truth. As we’ve discovered, the carcinogens present in tobacco are not included in e-cigarettes. The “smoke” seen when these devices are used is actually water vapour, which does not leave a lingering smell afterwards.
Myth five: Explosions and fires caused by e-cigarettes are common.
Fact: There have been cases where e-cigarettes have exploded and caught fire, but thankfully, they are quite isolated. You can further reduce the small risk of this happening by avoiding poor-quality devices and messing around with batteries. Vapers have nothing to worry about unless they follow a manufacturer’s instruction and use their e-cig sensibly.
Myth six: Teens and kids are encouraged to start smoking because of e-cigs.
Fact: It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes and e-liquids to under 18s in the UK. Although we use packaging to make our products look attractive, we do not market them to underage people and believe the law must be followed.
Myth seven: Smoking is less addictive than vaping.
Fact: Although vaping can be delicious because of the array of flavours that’s out there, there’s no evidence to conclude that electronic cigarettes are more addictive than tobacco. Indeed, research suggests the reverse is true.
Myth eight: The ingredients of e-liquids are a mystery.
Fact: Reputable companies pride themselves on making sure their customers know about the ingredients in their e-liquids. If you’re struggling to find this information on a manufacturer’s website, always try to find a more transparent provider.
Myth nine: There’s no nicotine in e-cigarettes.
Fact: Most of the time, there will be some level of nicotine in e-liquids. That said, when buying them, it’s easy to decide how strong you want the concentration to be. If you’re just giving up smoking, it might be worth going for a stronger e-liquid to start with. Liquids which contain no nicotine at all are also available.
Myth ten: Anti-freeze is used in e-liquids.
Fact: This is a complete lie – and any manufacturer intending to develop a loyal customer base (and avoid jail), would never dream of putting such a dangerous chemical in their e-liquids. A common ingredient in e-liquids is propylene glycol, which is also found in food and medicine. This is not to be confused with ethylene glycol, a compound usually found in anti-freeze.
Unfortunately, it’s likely that you’ll hear some of these myths when you’re vaping while out and about. Keep this article to hand so you can dispel untruths fast.
