E-cigarettes still quite an unfamiliar concept for many Britons, so it’s important for vapers to be considerate in public.
If you’re thinking about becoming a vaper, or you’ve just purchased your first starter kit, there are a few things to bear in mind so you don’t break any rules – or make other people feel uncomfortable.
A lot of the controversy concerning e-cigarettes is because of misinformation. Using your device responsibly can help eliminate these myths and make vaping more socially acceptable.
E-cigarettes do mean you can deal with cravings in places where smoking tobacco is forbidden, but there are a few exceptions. Here are some top tips for minding your Ps and Qs in public.
1. Understand the facts.
It’s worth taking the time to learn about the different aspects of e-cigarettes, meaning you can answer questions from concerned friends and relatives about how it works. Our knowledge centre is a great place to start, as it’s filled with guides explaining the different components found in these devices – as well as how to use them safely.
2. Ask for permission.
If you’re in a pub or another public space, whipping out your e-cigarette and starting to vape without permission can be frowned upon. It’s always worth asking for permission first if you’re unsure about their policies.
3. Explain why you vape.
It can be helpful to explain to people why you are using an e-cigarette. Some Britons don’t understand how vaping is a powerful tool for stopping smoking.
4. Don’t vape around children.
Generally, putting your e-cigarette away when you’re around children comes recommended. These devices are often mistaken for tobacco, and many parents don’t realise that the vapour they create are not harmful like second-hand smoke.
5. Know which areas are out of bounds.
There may not be any laws against using e-cigs in some places, but common sense should help you determine where it’s best to avoid vaping – like trains, planes, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and hospitals. Some travel companies and clinics are treating vaping exactly like smoking and ban both on their premises, both inside and out.
Using an e-cigarette in an inappropriate location can result in some unpleasant confrontation. Other customers may end up complaining about your vapour, and it can get awkward if a member of staff asks you to stop.
Although you might take the time to explain vaping to somebody, you shouldn’t always expect them to understand and change their opinions straight away.
